CORKY’S SCORPION CONTROL SERVICE

Scorpions are predators that feed on a wide range of insects, spiders, centipedes, and even other scorpions. Larger scorpions can feed on small lizards, snakes, and mice. Scorpions are nocturnal animals, meaning they rest and hide during the day and only go out at night to find mates and hunt. They are commonly found in deserts, but are present in grasslands, savannas, and certain forested and mountain areas as well.

The most prominent Scorpion species in Southern California are the California Common Scorpion, the Stripe Tail Scorpion, the Arizona Hairy Scorpion, and the Bark Scorpion. Although these creatures have a bad reputation, only one species in the United States has venom strong enough to seriously harm humans. The Bark Scorpion is found primarily in vast areas of Arizona and a small population live in southeastern California. The venom of this scorpion may produce severe pain and swelling at the sting site, numbness, breathing problems, muscle twitching, and convulsions. Death is rare and an antivenin is available for severe cases.

Scorpions reach adulthood in about 1 to 2 years and live about 3-5 years. They have a very interesting mating ritual. A male will grasp a female’s pincers with his and lead her in a courtship dance that can last for several hours. Unless males are really, fast on their feet, they usually become the main course at the mating feast. Females birth live young, which are whiteish, soft and rounded. A brood ranges from a few to upwards of 30. Once the young are expelled from the mother, they climb onto her back, stay there until they molt, then they begin to wander remaining close to the hiding spot for a few days. Then they are on their own.

In almost all human, scorpion encounters, scorpions are not the aggressors. Humans are most often putting hands, feet or other body parts where a scorpion is hiding, resting or scurrying on the hunt. Stinging encounters can be prevented. Do not leave shoes, boots, clothing items, or wet towels outdoors where scorpions can hide in them. Shake towels, clothing and shoes before putting them on. Wear gloves when working in the yard. Wear shoes outdoors, during the evening hours.

When Scorpions have made their presence known on your property, a professional pest control company needs to be called in to manage their control with a consistent service offering that provides year-round protection, since scorpions migrate from surrounding properties.

Corky’s Scorpion Control Service is just such an offering. The initial service starts with:

  • A comprehensive property inspection to determine infestation levels and identify breeding sites and points of access into any structures.

  • Interior services are rarely necessary, but when they are, an exterior service will always accompany it. These services are priced separately.
