Lead Cable Borer
Known to infest a wide variety of hardwoods, especially oak, they will also attack wine corks, newly painted houses, and flooring. They will even re-infest wood from which they have emerged. They actually bore through lead, especially telephone cables, which is how they got their name. They can also bore into asphalt roofing materials.
Life Cycle:
Females bore an egg gallery where eggs are laid and remain about three weeks until they hatch. The larvae also carve out a gallery, going through six molts in nine months to become a pupa. It takes two weeks in this stage to become an adult. The adults remain in the wood for a month or so before emerging. Only one generation develops each year, the adults living one to six weeks.
