Black Polycaon
These beetles are about 3/4th inch in size, and obviously of black color. They infest just about any wood, especially softwoods and new construction materials, and will attack cupboards, cabinets, furniture, and especially plywood. They will also get into trees-both dead and living, but will not reinfest wood once they have left since it needs a dying tree with bark.
Life Cycle:
Eggs are laid directly on or in the infected wood products. Larvae hatch and burrow deeply into the wood, and stay there for at least a year while developing. They leave an exit hole when emerging, usually the first sign of the infestation. Every September the adults emerge from the infested wood, looking for a new habitat.
